While hernia repair is generally safe, it isnt without risks and new devices such as synthetic mesh used in surgery have been linked to pain, malfunction and infection risks. The risk of complications is especially high for patients who have other illnesses such as diabetes or cancer. And the growing population of obese patients is at special risk of both complications and recurrence of their hernias from internal weight-related pressure, leading surgeons to delay procedures until patients slim down. Emanuele Lo Menzo , a surgeon at the University of Maryland Hernia Center , tells the Health Blog that while the first step is to encourage patients to enter a weight-loss program, in some cases he recommends bariatric surgery, especially if they dont have a high likelihood of losing weight on their own and their hernia is complex and could become dangerous. Judith Bowers, a 41-year-old stylist and salon manager who lives near Harrisburg, Pa., and says she was nearly 200 pounds overweight, was one such case.

A medical team diagnosed the hernia after Netanyahu felt pain on Saturday. The Prime Minister was given general anesthesia, and Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon was appointed acting Prime Minister during the few hours Netanyahu was unconscious. Netanyahu will be released later Sunday to recuperate further at home. The weekly Cabinet meeting has been postponed. The prime minister’s office says Defense Minister Yaalon is leading a ministerial meeting on prisoners’ affairs in Netanyahu’s place. Ministers are expected to approve the release of 26 Palestinian prisoners as part of U.S.-led Israeli-Palestinian peace talks that begin this week.

Inguinal Hernia An inguinal hernia occurs when soft tissue protrudes through a tear or break in the abdominal wall. An inguinal hernia will cause pain, particularly when coughing, bending over or lifting a heavy object. As the hernia progresses, you may develop a bulge on either side of the pubic bone. Similar to a femoral hernia, you may feel a dragging sensation at the hernia site. Ventral Hernia A ventral hernia occurs when a portion of the abdominal muscles becomes weak and the intestine pushes through a tear.
